SPRING BULBS SUCH AS ALLIUM REQUIRE WELL DRAINED SOILS
A well drained soil and a sunny area will suit these bulbs just fine. Alliums are always at their best if planted among the perennial plants in the garden. The leaves of the Allium are not particularly on the attractive side and they do wilt back quickly after flowering. This way the leaves will be hidden by the other flowers in your garden.
The tall allium bulbs are very stunning when stretching above flowers that are shorter in stature than themselves. In gardens that are smaller, plant a group of five of these tall alliums and their voilet purple and lilac shades will make a beautiful contrast to the less dense inflorescence of most perennial plants. These spring bulbs should be garnering more attention when designing your garden plans. The Allium bulb
should be planted at a depth of eight inches using the same type of fertilizer described earlier in flower bulbs.See fertilizer for your spring bulbs
There are a number of this species that can provide the passage between real spring flowering bulbs and the summer flowering bulbs. Here you can combine the allium spring bulbs with tulips, hyacinths and narcissi for spectacular early display. The ones flowering later on can be combined with the glads and dahlias continuing the flower explosion.

ALLIUM SPRING BULBS AS A POT OR CONTAINER FLOWER
The tall allium bulbs are not a consideration for container gardening. The lower growing allium species is way too disheveled for this purpose. The other really obvious reason is rapid deterioration of the foliage after flowering. There are several that could provide for great expections in a pot or container situation such as a christophii or a karataviense. They will not grow too tall in your pot and planted at 8 inches deep and in a pot that is at least 20 inches deep. The pot should be protected from the frost. Here are pictures of the two container bulbs.
