SANDY SOIL PLANTS CHARTS REVIEW CAREFULLY

These plants in chart form should assist in your review.

ANNUALS

Common name USDA zone Comments
blanket flower 5-8 need well drained soil
black-eyed susan 4-8 lots of sun good drainage
spider plant 4-8 thrives in dry sandy soil
geranium 4-8 these are the pelargonium type
phlox 3-9 mildew and heat resistant
globe amaranth 3-8 great for cut flowers
cosmos 4-9 tolerates poor soil and drought

These are definitely not the only annuals that can be grown with little amending and the use of a good fertilizer you have flowers without a lot of labor.

SANDY SOIL PLANTS PERENNIALS GOOD FOR THE GARDEN

PERENNIALS

Common name USDA zone Comments
yarrow 3-8 drought tolerant poor soil
aster 5-7 full sun well drained soil but evenly moist
cone flower 4-9s&w Average soil and hot dry conditions
daylily 4-9s&w Some varieties take winter cold and southern sun
red hot poker 5-8s/10w well drained but not dry soil
gayfeather 4-8s/9w full sun with well drained soil
stonecrop/sedum 3-9s&w thrive with only a modest level of nutrients

These again are what I suggest in the use of perennials in the sandy garden. It is still necessary to use a good fertilizer but these plants will grow with less work on your part.

SANDY SOIL PLANTS BUT THEY ARE TREES AND SHRUBS

SHRUBS AND TREES

Common name USDA zone Comments
Amur Maple 3-8 drought and heat tolerant
butterfly bush 3-8>/td> full sun and well drained soil
smoke tree 5-8s/9w tolerant of most soil types
lavendar 5-7s/10w tolerant of all sweet soil types and full sun
mock orange 5-8s&w full sun and well drained soil
rugosa rose 3-7 drought salt and sand tolerant

These trees and shrubs can be grown with little or no extra labor as long as you apply the needed moisture and fertilizer. I shoud note that the proper moisture is necessary in every one of the charts.
