SELECTING LAWN CARE TOOLS
One of the most important areas is the proper selection of your lawn care tools.
This page deals in generalities and not in specific brands of equipment. It is an attempt to give you important facts about the quality of the lawn care tools you
should be looking for and the extent to which you can utilize them based on your intended use of the end product. Here will be covered the selection of riding mowers,
garden hoses, leaf blowers shears, watering cans, walk behind mowers and yes even garden gloves. Just remember that old saying slighty modified here "the right
lawn care tools for the right job" We do have a web site that you can go to and check
the opinion of other people on almost any lawn care tools. We will provide the URL to that web site at the end of each tool discussion if that is the tool you wnat more information to make your decision.
SELECTING A GARDEN HOSE
There are of course several kinds of useful garden hoses. This will discuss both the
soaker hose and the good old garden hose. In your lawn care tools inventory you will
eventually encounter times when both types will be required. Now I know I am chatting with
some of you gardeners that have the installed automatic sprinklers and the first instinct
is to skip over this part. There are areas that can not be reached with the auto sprinkler
system unless you have installed many many heads at great expense. You can not wash off
your riding tractor with a sprinkler system and it is no substitute for cleaning up spills or mud run-off from your patio. Now that we have that introduction lets see what selecting the
right hose can do for you.
A good soaker hose needs to be constructed of a quality material. A great many soaker hoses are stiff and decay and crack in one season. A good quality material will also be flexible
because you will need to get around those tight bends in your garden. You could use a good lawn care tools garden hose to do the job since it is difficult to cover every single area
like potted plants and trees with a soaker hose. The same requirements should be followed in
the selection of a garden hose. The last thing you need with either hose is one that kinks and shuts down your watering chores. It is better to be prepared to spend a little more money for a quality hose. If you want to review the brands of either hose be it garden or soaker

SELECTING A LAWNMOWER
Anyone who mows lawn frequently will certainly begin thinking about additional lawn care tools like a riding lawn mower especially if you have a 1/4 acre or more to keep looking good. There are electrical ones available as well as gas. They will mow at least 1/2 acre before needing that recharge. They are quiet and do not produce smelly fumes but they just
will not produce the power of a gas driven lawn care tools machine.Horsepower is the secret to these lawn mowers and of course more horsepower is usually better. However if you have a machine that has smooth shifting and rotary blades that have little friction and belts
that are not loose or sloppy, then horsepower is secondary. It is also possible to get away with less horsepower if you have a level and smooth yard, but if your lawn is hilly with slopes than more horsepower maybe required.
Your lawn care tools cutting width also comes in various sizes. It is wise to survey your lawn before procuring a lawn mower with a very wide cut. You may like the idea of a quicker lawn mow with a wider cut. Now you must give notice to the various obstacles in your lawn in which the width of the blade will be critical. A word to the wise;check your lawn before making a
purchase you may regret the width of your mower after purchase. You can however purchase a tractor model with a tight or even zero turning radius but be prepared to pay more for these type of lawn care tools.
This type of mower has no steering wheel,no gas pedal,no forward and reverse control and not
even a brake pedal. The entire transmission and drive system are controlled by two levers. It will come as quite a surprised to those of you who are more accustomed to the steering wheel and gas and brake pedal. It may take a few spins around the lawn to get use to the difference. Once you get the hang of it you will find it easier than the old steering wheel. You may even find it fun to drive these lawn care tools across the lawn. Now you will not have to worry about all those raised beds or other obstructions in your lawn.
Whatever mower you choose just make sure it is comfortable and made of high quality materials for your lawn mowing needs. It will make your job easy and pleasant.

LAWN CARE TOOLS SELECTION OF A LEAF BLOWER
If you have a relatively small lawn with a few deciduous trees the good old rake maybe enough to take care of your problem.A large property with numerous trees maybe easily cleared of fallen leaves with a power assist from a leaf blower. It is good to remember that leaves can also come from adjoining properties thanks to the wind.
These lawn care tools can be purchased in two basic types either gasoline propelled or electric. The electric models are lighter and easier to maneuver then their gasoline counterparts and prove to be much quieter and less expensive. However without the power of a gasoline driven engine it will take longer to clear an area. The power ratings are marked on the unit and measured in the cubic feet of air per minute(CFM)that is expelled.
These lawn care tools will either run off a battery or an electrical cord. The electric cord is used to reduce the weight of the model giving you more ability to handle the blower in a
reasonable manner. If you have a small yard this is definitely not a problem but if your trees are scattered around your lawn far from the outlet then of course you should consider a
gasoline powered blower.
The last thing you want is carrying 50 or more feet of electrical cord behind the blower because I have endured this problem and let me tell you it is both inconvenient and often ends up in your way. It is easily tripped over and somehow it finds its way to be just lying over the leaves you want to blow away. Now you have to manage both the leaf blower and become a cord management expert.
Lawn care tools gasoline model of course is much heavier but it can handle any size job that you require of it. Many of this type can operate in reverse acting as a leaf vacuum as well as simply pushing the leaves to another location. A very good consideration since the blowing of leaves into your neighbor's lawn or street may not be the most desirable thing.
You will want to consider the tradeoff of weight vs power. After my encounter with both of these lawn care tools,I consider the gasoline operated one a much better choice because it gets the job done quicker less work and more efficiency.

SELECTING A WATERING CAN
Ok so now you can say he is crazy!Watering cans are considered lawn care tools have you looked at the multitude of designs for such a simple device? It could very well be that one suits your needs better than another. The weight of water is about eight pounds per gallon and including the weight of a metal watering can it could weigh over nine pounds. The metal or exotic looking watering can is certainly attractive enough but why add all that extra weight to carry around your lawn. There are many strong, attractive, and rust proof plastic containers today which are excellent lawn care tools.
It can be convenient to have a detachable rose(the part through which your water flows) as sometimes you require a gentle shower and other times a rush of water depending on the watering task at hand. This will either require two watering cans in your lawn care tools inventory or choosing one with a changeable rose. It is more common to see this option in metal watering cans then in plastic ones.
FIND YOURSELF A GLASS ONE-HALF GALLON MILK JAR
I have in my inventory a small watering can for indoor chores. It is over watering that sometimes gets beginning gardners in trouble with their plants. Actually I found a half gallon glass milk jar to be the idea indoor watering device. This way according to the requirements of your watering you can dump the entire contents or just enough water for the plants. As an example, I have a huge indoor geranium plant that takes the entire half gallon and a norfolk pine that uses one quarter of the jar. You can find one of these jars either at a garage sale or any antique shop into glassware.
Outdoors hoses are often the choice in lawn care tools but hoses are heavy and you have to drag them around all the time watching your flower beds for hose damage. There are
definitely places where your hose will not reach and this is where your large watering can comes into play. A soaker hose may also be impractical for some areas or rain is not sufficient for your garden so the larger cans will deliver enough water to satisfy. I have also used the large watering cans on small patches of repaired lawn simply because a sprinkler is overkill for the job at hand.
I recommend more than one water can in your lawn care tools and find your self a glass watering jar for those indoor jobs.Whatever you do make sure not to allow water sit in your watering can especially outdoors for very long. This encourages the growth of bacteria and providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes. There are no reviews available for watering cans.
SELECTING YOUR LAWN CARE TOOLS GLOVES AND CARTS
A thought probably went through your mind is to why a pair of gloves would qualify as lawn
care tools. Well I do know that some people garden all their lives without the use of gloves and except for some ugly calluses and dirty hands they suffer no ill effects. However for many this is not a good idea from unwanted residue to thorny bushes and bug bites the glove is a necessary tool. The technology today has indeed brought gloves out of the dark ages of gardening. In the world of today there are so many materials that gloves can be found for almost any task.
I know that this will sound rather elementary but size remains your first criterion in choosing your gloves. This piece of common sense is too often over looked for other considerations or attributes such as lightest, toughest,or least expensive gloves. However if the gloves donot have a proper fit they will not do the job for which the gloves were intended. Here is where I learned a valuable lesson which I pass on to you. The gloves should not have any room at the finger tips because whatever you are doing will be more difficult to grip.It disables the ability to manipulate objects and you end up taking the gloves off. Why did you spend the money for perfectly good lawn care tools gloves just to take them off because you cannot handle the task at hand?
The basic purpose of gloves of course is to protect the skin. The gloves have to be tough and you have to decide how tough depending on the use of the gloves. There is no substitute for leather no matter the improvements in other synthetic materials that has developed. Then again if you are using those modern pesticides and other lawn care chemicals, you will require a pair of gloves that will not allow the penetration of chemicals.
The lawn care tools here might need to include a set of neoprene gloves. These gloves are impervious to pesticides provided they donot gain access at the wrist. A wrist protection in the form of cloth band straps or a very snug fit can help. The use of nylon or latex gloves can be useful in some dry chemical situations but will not provide proper protection against liquid pesticides.
There is one point in the gardening year when fingerless gloves may come in handy while still protecting the palms and joints. This could be particularly useful when transplanting plants since you may need to position the roots carefully in the soil. Select a pair or maybe even two as your lawn care tools to keep your skin safe since it is a most important barrier against infection and soil bacteria coming from scrapes and cuts as you toil in your garden. No reviews available on gloves.
We do not cover in any detail about the use and purchase of garden carts but here is a spot for you to check out..LEARN ABOUT THE USE AND CARE OF GARDEN CARTS - Garden Carts are designed to carry around your tools and haul around equipments that you are going to need.
LAWN CARE TOOLS SELECTING THE SHEARS AND SHOVELS
There are many types of shears. The type that prunes your roses, the type that reaches up into the trees and removes large branches and the type that trims smaller branches from shrubs or bushes called lopers. Here is where you donot scrimp to get away with the cheapest product. In whichever design you purchase quality is of the upmost importance. You buy a cheap pair of pruning shears and make that bevel cut which tears the branch away from the plant. This is not good. Yes you can buy shears that are just strong scissors but you need to purchase these with curved edges to provide the strongest shears with the cleanest cut. The second most important factor is something most people give little thought and that is the fit of the grips in your hands. The sharpest shears are of little use to you if you cannot properly grip them without the shears falling from your hands.
Lawn care tools include those shears with handles which I call lopers. They come in various lengths for the job to be attacked. I like a pair that is at least three feet long so you can reach those limbs on the bottom branches of trees without engaging an uncertain unsteady ladder and becoming an injured statistic in your lawn. They come with both wooden handles and rubber grip handles. I find the wooden handles to be slightly slippery even with gloves and so I prefer the rubber grips. I also like, and they cost a little more money, the lopers that operate with a little teeth wheel mounted at the end of the blades. The cutting operation is so smooth you donot realize you just cut a branch unless you bite off more than you can chew which is a bad habit with lawn care tools. You will not only ruin your shears over time but a strain on your own body for the attempted removal of a branch.

THE SELECTION OF SHOVELS FOR YOUR LAWN CARE TOOLS
Shovels are another essential lawn care tools for lawn work as well as gardening. They also
come in a bevy of shapes, styles, and materials. I want to comment right here that if you purchase any kind of shovel with hardened plastic parts, unless your are shoveling in sand or
a raised bed garden, you are only asking for trouble. It still does not have the sharpness or tensile strength to use in the blade portion.
It is essential that the blade is of a metal alloy that will not rust and will continue to keep a sharp edge against digging in rocky soil. I will have more to say about that in a moment. It needs to have the right weight and a shovel with a light plastic handle will leave you exhausted at the end of the project. The handle should be of an unbreakable wood material like oak or maple, the handle could still break through misuse, and the blade should be fasten with strong carbon steel screws. If you can find a handle that is somewhat flexible in use is ideal. The early death of a shovel is almost certain to be due from a broken handle.
THE IDEAL LAWN GARDEN TOOLS SHOVEL FOR A ROCK GARDEN LAWN
The shovel to the left is the one for you if you have a rock garden for a lawn or garden. I have owned one of these for going on 10 years and never has it not lived up to the task at hand. I have uncovered and dug up rocks larger then your fist without phasing this shovel. I mean I have actually pried the rocks out of the soil with this shovel.I think somebody plants those rocks in my lawn and garden otherwise where do they all come from each spring. It is by far the greatest shovel I have ever owned. It comes from Gardener Supplies in Vermont. I get no monies from telling you this but I feel if you have rocks you should own one. It is not the cheapest shovel in the world but will last you for years.
